Class 151
The Class 151 was a member of the Sprinter family of units.
It was a prototype train built by Metro-Cammell of Birmingham.
It was built in response to British Rail’s need for modern trains to replace their aging first generation fleet.
It was in competition with the Class 150 when being constructed but unfortunately due to it’s mostly proprietary components namely bogies and transmission it sadly lost the bid.
two units were ever built with (at the time) revolutionary equipment such as sliding doors and an all Aluminium construction which reduced noise.
After 1989 the units were stored at Llandudno until some time between 1989 and 2000 when they were bought by SERCO who moved them to Derby, They had planned to re-enter them into service however was unable to find the parts to do so. They were then subsequently left at Derby, Then in 2000 Endeavour Rail purchased them and had them moved to Crewe and had planned to refurbish them for Spot Hire services for TOCs (Train Operating Companies), This sadly did not go through and they were scrapped on site in 2004.
